“Providing an environment for kids to learn the benefits of playing team sports while setting an example of good sportsmanship and community involvement.”
About Us – Sanibel Sports, Inc. is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization which was formed to manage and operate various youth sports leagues on Sanibel Island. The philosophy of Sanibel Sports is to provide all kids and players a fun, and safe, environment to participate in organized team sports. Further, we encourage the importance of giving back to our community by giving our youth the opportunity to volunteer in support of worthy causes. All positions within the Sanibel Sports organization are voluntary and all donations and league registration fees go towards league operations, equipment, and player scholarships when needed. Sanibel Sports works directly with the City of Sanibel, who performs extensive background checks and basic CPR training for all coaches and volunteers that interact in any sport we represent.
Volunteering – Parent/guardian involvement is a vital part of our organization, and without your involvement, our leagues would not exist. It is expected that each youth participant will have an adult family member volunteer their time to assist with coaching during one (1) sport season (excluding lacrosse) during a calendar year. Each time a family member volunteers, a partial registration refund will be given by the end of that season. Only one (1) refund will be given per season per family. Each volunteer must have a background check performed by the City of Sanibel prior to any involvement with practice or games. The time commitment for volunteering is typically one (1) practice per week, one (1) game per week, and ongoing team communication.
Soccer – The Youth Soccer league has been a staple in the Sanibel Island community for many years. The goal of the league is to provide the players the skills necessary to learn the game, along with encouraging teamwork and good sportsmanship. All of the divisions within the league are co-ed and are not highly competitive. Typically, each team will practice once per week (day of week depends on the coach’s availability), with weekly games being held on Friday evenings at the Rec. fields.
Typically, we will have the following age divisions: Ages 4-5 / Ages 6-7 / Ages 8-10 / Ages 10-13. If you feel your child needs to play up one age level, due to skill level or maturity, please contact us to discuss.
Flag Football – The Youth Flag Football league has been a staple in the Sanibel Island community for many years. The goal of the league is to provide the players the skills necessary to learn the game, along with encouraging teamwork and good sportsmanship. All of the divisions within the league are co-ed and are not overly competitive. Typically, each team will practice once per week, with weekly games being held on Friday evenings at the Rec. fields.
Each season, we typically have the following age divisions: Developmental (Kindergarten and 1st Grade first timers) / Grades 1-3 / Grades 4-6 / Grades 6-8. If you feel your child needs to play up one age level, due to skill level or maturity, please contact us to discuss.
T-Ball / Baseball – The youth baseball league on Sanibel Island was created in the early 1970’s by long-time island resident, Dick Muench. Many of the league’s ideals at the time of its creation are visible in today’s league. These ideals include good sportsmanship, respect for the game, and team camaraderie. Our baseball league is instructional in nature with the goal being teaching the basics of the sport, and ensuring the kids are having fun. The majority of our coaches have been involved in the league for many years. Our coaches have players in the league and are committed to the kids. Our baseball divisions:
T-ball – Pre-K – First Grade (ages 4-6): players use the tee when batting and all players have an opportunity to bat each inning. The field is smaller than with other divisions and the very basics of hitting, catching, throwing, and running are taught.
Minors – Grades 2-5 (ages 7-11): the game is played on a regulation sized field and the ball is pitched by a machine for accuracy purposes. Continued instruction with hitting, catching, throwing, and base running while learning game strategies. Divisions based on age and ability.
Lacrosse – Sanibel Sports, Inc. is proud to offer youth Lacrosse here on Sanibel! We have partnered with island resident Ralph Quillen, who will be in charge of managing and coaching the camps. Ralph is a lacrosse coach at the Canterbury School in Fort Myers, and is a member of US Lacrosse. We hold a series camps in the Spring for both boys and girls. These camps will concentrate on teaching the basic skills needed to play the game, and in a highly supervised setting. As the camps progress, additional techniques and strategies of the game will be introduced. Players will be required to provide their personal equipment as noted below. Sanibel Sports, Inc. has some personal equipment available, please contact us for more information. Youth equipment can be purchased from stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Play-it-Again Sports.
